James Wright's Homepage: Honoring Onne
I’m excited to be participating in Save the Bay’s “The Swim” from Newport to Jamestown on July 19th. The 2-mile swim is the biggest awareness and fundraising event Save the Bay holds to support their remarkable work protecting and improving Narragansett Bay. It’s also a significant personal challenge. I've wanted to complete The Swim for a long time, but with busy summers in Jamestown there's always been an excuse to skip it. Not this year!
My friend Onne van der Wal inspired me to get out of the pool and into open water swimming. Onne’s done The Swim over 15 times but this year he can’t participate as he battles illness. I'm doing The Swim in his honor. He's been a tireless supporter of Narragansett Bay and he's the inspiration for me to do this swim. I’ll be thinking of Onne as I train and during those 2 miles on July 19th. Next year I hope we can swim it together.
I'm definitely not going to set any speed records crossing the Bay! But I hope I can make an impact raising funds. I've never done a fundraiser like this before and I know all my FB friends are generous supporters of many causes. I hope you’ll consider supporting my fundraising goal with a donation of any amount to Save the Bay.
