Save the Bay’s mission is “to protect and improve Narragansett Bay.” This mission resonates with me:  in the 1970s my Dad spearheaded the development of a chemical recovery system that rendered the effluent produced from making paper clean and non-toxic. At the time, paper mills routinely polluted waterways and, until the development of this process, so did the paper company where my Dad worked.

Since 1970, Save the Bay has worked towards making Narragansett Bay clean and non-toxic.  Today, it is a habitat to fish, plankton, seals, and human aquatic wildlife. The Save the Bay Swim is the organization’s major fundraiser and the money raised goes towards education, advocacy, and habitat restoration.

I’ve wanted to do this swim for some time because it is an adventure to swim two miles, across a bay, and near a major suspension bridge. I decided to do it this year because it is the Swim’s 50th anniversary and it marks my year of turning 65, which makes me nostalgic for my father.  My Dad was required to retire at 65 and he has long since passed, but I think he would like the idea of my raising money to help sustain a waterway.
