If you've met me, you likely know how connected I am to the ocean and Narragansett Bay. So many important events in my life have come about as a result of growing up on, in, and under the waters of RI's most important natural resource. My parents ignited my passion for the water as we cruised new england on our family sailboat . I distinctly remember my first contact with Save the Bay staff at the age of 10 when they sponsored a junior regatta.
My careers in marine research and now in education are directly linked to my time and experiences in RI waters. Over the past eight years I have become more involved with Save the Bay. As a school leader, “Explore the Bay” education programs have become part of our school culture in our district. Students embrace the empowerment that comes with these unique learning experiences and an opportunity to demonstrate their own leadership potential as young stewards of the bay. This past year we extended the programs to additional schools and the feedback has been outstanding.
I likely would not have met my amazing wife if we had not randomly ended up racing sailboats together on Narragansett Bay. Our three children now share our love of the water and are so excited to do their part to preserve its balance and beauty!
As the chair of SAVE the BAY's education committee and a member of the Save the Bay board, I am honored to be able to contribute to the organization. Save the Bay truly embodies the spirit of their mission, “To Protect and Improve Narragansett Bay” for all!
I know most of my friends and family have at least one happy place and countless memories somehow associated with Narragansett Bay.
Please consider supporting me as I swim the bay on July 15th. More importantly, consider supporting an organization that works tirelessly so all of us can continue to embrace Save the Bay's vision for a fully swimmable, fishable, healthy Narraganset Bay, accessible to all!
Cheers,
Neil Marcaccio
